Wiele zachodzących zjawisk, ich rozwój czy też kierunki zmian, uzależnione są od przestrzennych interakcji zachodzących pomiędzy sąsiadującymi regionami. Model przestrzennej analizy shift-share, który został wprowadzony do badań przez Nazarę i Hewingsa, przedstawia przestrzennie zmodyfikowane stopy wzrostu (tempa zmian) poszczególnych wariantów zjawiska przez uwzględnienie temp wzrostu zjawiska w obszarach sąsiadujących.
